Should you help your child get out of debt?:
Should I help my child get out of debt? As a parent of a child in debt, we must answer that question. There are three different ways to answer that question, and it is up to you to decide what is right to do for you and your child.
If you give your child money to help them out you might think that they will have a fresh start, or that they will appreciate your kindness. A lot of parents feel that this is the best option, but will this act of kindness teach them how to manage their money better or will it make them think that their parents will always be there to bail them out of trouble? Will it teach them to be financially independent?
If you loan your child money to help them repay their debt, then expect a payment from them, will it help them learn? Will they repay you? Will you resent them if they don’t repay you? Will they stop buying things on their credit cards?
If you give your child encouragement to seek advice from a financial consultant, and keep a watchful eye on them as they struggle, but don’t offer any monetary support, will it teach them to become more responsible with their credit? Will they learn to become more financially stable?
It is a choice that each parent who faces this situation must make individually. If decide that you want them to talk to someone about their financial situation, give them our number. We will have a trained, professional consultant talk to them about their situation and give them their options. Together, we can make sure that your child learns how to manage money now, before it becomes a lifelong struggle.
